Chapter 23

A lot of people say that silence is more disconcerting than screaming, depending on the context. Like with children. If they’re quiet when they should be playing, something serious is going down. So when the elevator opens up to the penthouse and absolute silence greets me, my adrenaline spikes. I thought it was risky to leave Viktor alone with Lyra, but Felix and I had to deal with the rogue dryad clan today. He’s still downstairs, picking up the day’s requests and messages from the concierge.

“Hello? Anyone home?” I yell, my words literally echoing in the vastness of the penthouse.

Going from room to room, finding no evidence of a struggle, only leaves me more anxious. What the fuck did those two do to each other? Did Lyra leave?

A strange twist in my stomach catches me off guard as I think of losing that little fireball. I’ve known her less than two full days. Why should I care if she stays or goes? But I can’t deny that my world has been brightening with her in it. More exciting, less routine. I don’t want to lose that so soon.

I call out again from the back hallway, knocking on Viktor’s bedroom door, only to receive no answer. But then the distant chime of the elevator pulls my attention.

The doors hum as they open, revealing Viktor and Lyra. She has her arms folded across her front, a bag clutched to her chest as she stares daggers at Viktor’s back. He steps out first, signaling for her to follow. His face is twisted in its usual scowl, whilst hers is pink and flustered.

“Felix with you?” I ask, knowing the answer, since the elevator doors are already slipping shut.

Viktor shakes his head, moving into the kitchen and opening the fridge. He surveys the contents before plucking a few things from inside and setting them down on the counter.

“Sit,” he orders calmly, and I find myself immediately settling onto one of the stools at the island. “You too, Lyra,”

She isn’t quite as keen to do as he asks, and I watch her closely while she toys with her options. Eventually, she puts the bag she’s been carrying down on the floor and takes a seat one away from me.

“Felix will be here in a second,” Viktor adds. His hands are busy chopping green onions, tomatoes and avocado.

“So...” I muse, pursing my lips as my eyes shift from Viktor to Lyra. “What have you guys been up to?”

Silence cloaks the three of us once more, and I suddenly feel like the naughty child in a classroom. The one that clearly can’t follow social cues.

“Do I have to be here, or can I go back to my tastefully decorated prison cell?” Lyra offers a forced, tight-lipped smile, glancing between Viktor and me.

“No,” Vik snaps, unwrapping a parchment covered pack of raw chicken. “You will sit, you will listen, and you will eat.”

Lyra’s nostrils flare, her chest rising and falling with shallow breaths as she tries to tackle her rage.
