PHI KAPPA CHI FRAT HOUSE

A fraternity house seems like an unlikely place for a haunting. In frat house movies like Animal House, the only figures clad in flowing sheets on the screen are the drunken students at the toga party. But in real life, there is a frat house in the Quad Cities known for housing spirits of a non-liquid variety.

Phi Kappa Chi, the fraternity house in question, is part of Davenport’s Palmer College of Chiropractic. Established in 1969, the house is located at 723 Main Street, and it is perhaps one of the most famous haunted houses in the bi-state area.

This two-story student-housing residence is high on a hill, and during the day, it looks like a perfectly normal frat house. But normal is not a word often used to describe this building and its paranormal history.

From the 1970s into the early 1980s, Jim Arpy, reporter for the Quad-City Times, wrote a series of articles about the haunting of the frat house. Manifestations of the haunting included unearthly footsteps, typewriters typing by themselves, toilets flushing when no one was there, doors opening and closing in the night with no one seen coming or going and an eerie blue light seen in both the basement and attic.

“I like to joke that every fraternity has its secrets, but the Phi Kappa Chi house also has some mysteries!” said Kyle Dickson, who conducts the Darker Side of Davenport tours. These tours introduce Quad-Citians to many of the city’s haunted sites, and the frat house is included. “People bring up the Phi Kappa Chi fraternity all the time, when they talk about haunted places in the Quad Cities,” he added.
