The Haunted Barn

Mrs. Hinzie had really done some useful spadework for us. There were two sites where uncanny goings-on had been reported and she wanted us to see them firsthand. In a country like California, where so much violence has taken place not only during the 19th century pioneer days but in comparatively recent times, psychic occurrences are not at all unlikely, and I only asked that there be some specific "complaint" in these cases. There was.

Our first stop was the Stagecoach Inn, a handsome mid-19th century building originally erected as a way station when this spot was a major factor in the stagecoach route to and from California. Later, it had deteriorated into an inn, the kind that takes on all comers and does not ask too many questions just so long as they can pay their bills.

According to Guy Runnion, editor of the Conejo News, who is the unofficial historian of this landmark, there had been killings here, and as far back as the 1930's, reports of hauntings at the Inn were prevalent.

A Mr. Dyke of nearby Thousand Oaks confirmed that his own father, a well-driller during those years, had spoken to him of such goings-on.

At present, the Inn is a museum, and it has just been moved on its foundations to a new location a few yards farther back from the original site to allow the freeway to pass. Whether the alleged ghost or ghosts would resent the move, or move out themselves, was a moot point—for me to find out.

The historical society in the person of Dr. Cyril Anderson has charge of the buildings now.

From 1952 to 1965, however, it had been used as a gift shop by a couple named McIntyre who spoke of a female ghost there; however, when questioned, Mrs. Kenneth McIntyre passed the matter off as "just a story" without substance.

When Gwen Hinzie was doing newspaper work in the area in 1962, she had occasion to visit the Inn frequently since it is only a few blocks away from the Hinzie house, and the land, in fact, is really one and the same parcel, connected with both the hill on which the Hinzie house now stands and the entire Hays family holdings around it. That this was of some significance we were to learn a little later.

But when Mrs. Hinzie first entered the 19-room mansion, Mrs. McIntyre remarked how odd it was that Mrs. Hinzie's hair should suddenly stand on end. Evidently hair raising is to Mrs. Hinzie what goose pimples are to Sybil Leek: an indicator of psychic energies in the area.

At this moment, Mrs. Hinzie heard a crash upstairs, but she was assured by the proprietor of the gift shop that there was nobody above stairs. But her curiosity was aroused and she next talked to Donna Fargo, of the famous Wells-Fargo family, regarding the Inn. Bandits, it seems, were roving in this area during stagecoach days, and only twenty miles away at Colahasas, things were truly "wild west."
