The Kohler House has great history and a few good ghost stories as well. Photo by Ann Alexander Leggett.
Rosetta, one of seven Viele children, was soon recognized across the county as being a good match for any bachelor in possession of a good fortune, attached as she was to the well-endowed Viele family. So it comes as little surprise that, six years after his arrival in Boulder and during his growth period as a man of status, thirty-five-year-old Kohler took nineteen-year-old Rosetta as his wife, effectively tying two influential Boulder families together forever.
The Kohlers had three children: Effie first, born in 1869 and dead before her first birthday, followed in 1871 by Frederick Jr. and in 1878 by Charles Edward, affectionately known as “C.E.” or just “Ed.” As the oldest son, Frederick Jr. found himself following in his father’s financial footsteps, working as a cashier at the Boulder National Bank and eventually heading up a new mining company that worked several claims in and around Boulder. Ed, however, embodied his father’s other half, the one that loved agriculture and business, and in time, he ended up taking over his father’s interests. On June 4, 1901—the thirty-third wedding anniversary of his parents—Ed married Rose Clarissa Carner, and they moved in with Frederick Sr. and Rosetta on the family ranch. After two years, the Kohlers decided that a change of scenery was in order and moved downtown. Frederick Jr. built a home at 943 Spruce, and Frederick Sr. built 942 Pine, where he lived in peace with his wife until his death in 1904.
Despite his peaceful home life, in the fall of 1904, the elder Kohler found himself unable to sleep. He suffered from insomnia for almost three weeks, and he couldn’t for the life of him figure out why. Some of his crops were not as large as he had expected, and a few had failed, but he wrote these off as “trifles.” Kohler summoned Dr. Dodge to his house on the morning of October 13 and told him the following: “I have nothing I should worry about, and yet I worry. I can’t sleep. I have a lot of property; a big income; own considerable bank stock; have money idle in the bank; and my family relations are of the best. I ought to be perfectly contented and not worry, and yet I worry.” After the doctor left, Kohler talked to his wife about going to see the farm. He decided, in the end, to stay at home and do some work around the house.
After he had been “around the house” for some time, Rosetta realized that she hadn’t seen or heard from him at all since their talk. She asked Frederick Jr. to come to the house, and they searched it room by room. The bathroom door was locked, and no answer was heard in response to their calls and knocks, so Frederick Jr. pried the door open with a crowbar. There, on the floor, they found the lifeless body of Frederick Kohler Sr.
