Chapter 5

“Let’s head to Sage’s, to see if he managed to pass on my message to Mike,” Brody said, soon after ten that night. “This waiting is driving me crazy.”

“I noticed. If ghosts could wear paths in a carpet, there’d be a hell of one from here through the bedrooms and back. Why hasn’t he let us know already, one way or the other?” Jon replied, before realizing neither Mike nor Sage had any idea where they were, or how to get in touch with them. “Okay. Dumb question.”

“No kidding.”

They arrived to find Sage watching the news. As soon as he saw them, he turned off the TV, telling them, “He might not live.”

“Who are you talking about?” Brody spat out.

“It was on the news. The police located Irwin in some rooming house. There was a shootout and…” He clenched his hands.

“Irwin was shot?”

Sage nodded, staring down at the floor. “Him—and Mike.”

“What the fuck? How?”

“All it said on the news was, the police—Mike and two other officers—apparently approached Irwin’s room. He shot through the door, they fired back, got inside, and there was a second man. He shot, and hit Mike. Irwin was on the floor, shot twice.” Sage drew in a shuddering breath.

“Did they get the bastard?” Brody asked.

“He’s dead,” Sage said, swallowing hard. He started toward the door. “I have to get to the hospital.”

“They won’t let you in to see him,” Brody replied.

“Then I’ll wait there until they do. I’ll go crazy sitting around here, wondering if he’s going to live or die.”

“He damned well better not die. We don’t need to make this a triumvirate,” Brody said harshly.

Jon looked at him, shaking his head. “Calm down. Getting pissed isn’t going to help.” He barely smiled. “Maybe Irwin will die. Then you can ask him in person if he knows who killed you.”

“With my luck, if he does he’ll go straight to Hell. No passing Go, no…Damn it. Damn it.”

“Why don’t we all go to the hospital,” Jon said, putting his arm around Brody’s shoulders. “You and I can find out how they’re doing, no problem. Sage can stew there as well as he can here, and we’ll let him…you—” he turned to Sage, “—know where things stand.”

“Mike’s going to be okay,” Jon said, kneeling in front of Sage. “Irwin’s still in surgery, from what we overheard.”

“I don’t give a damn about Irwin,” Sage grumbled. He glanced around and realized the people around him in the waiting room would think he was talking to himself. Very softly, trying not to move his lips too much, he asked, “What does okay mean?”

“Mike was wearing a bulletproof, well, bullet resistant, vest,” Brody replied. “The bullet hit it from fairly close range. Mike’s got a cracked sternum. A minor crack, which is painful but far from life-threatening. He’ll need to rest. Minimum aggravating activity until it heals. At least that’s what the doc told him while we were there. Pain meds and deep breathing exercises.”

“Thank God,” Sage whispered.
