Cope

After the train left Altoona, Cope had a nice lunch in the dining car with all of the kids. Ten and Ronan had gotten room service and were eating in the privacy of their compartment. Cope had a feeling they weren’t just wrapping their lips around roast beef sandwiches. Not that he minded one bit. Wolf was going to have a sleepover with Everly, leaving Jude and himself to spend the night alone, where he knew they’d get up to all kinds of extracurricular activities. What was the railroad equivalent to the Mile High Club? Cope snorted as suggestions filled his head.

He and Jude were back in their compartment getting ready for the public readings, which would take place in the Lincoln car.

“What’s so funny?” Jude asked as Cope buttoned his shirt.

“I was wondering if there’s a name like the mile-high club for having sex on a train.”

“How about the mile-long club?” Jude snickered.

“That’s a good one.” Cope pressed a kiss to Jude’s collarbone. “We’re gonna join it tonight, so make sure you have a good dinner. I need you fueled up and ready to rock and roll.”

“Oh, really? We’re gonna join the mile-long club?” Jude pulled Cope against his chest and nuzzled his neck when a knock on the door startled them apart.

“Who is it?” Cope called out.

“It’s Ten. Are you ready to go? Or are the two of you still joining the mile-long club?” Ten and Ronan roared with laughter.

“Oh, like you weren’t doing that exact thing after lunch,” Jude said, yanking the door open.

“We absolutely were,” Ten giggled, “but we didn’t have a name for it until now. Thanks for that.”

“You’re welcome, I think.” Cope shoved his wallet into his back pocket, along with the key card to the compartment. “Let’s go.”

Jude escorted Cope into the hallway and closed the door behind him, checking to make sure it was locked. “Are all of the guests going to be there while you do readings today or just the people who booked your time?”

“These are private readings, so it’s just the people who signed up. We have a public reading tomorrow night, so everyone will be there for that.” Cope waved to passengers as they passed through the train. He stopped outside the door to the Lincoln car. “It’s okay if you and Ronan stay, but you have to behave. These are people who are hoping to connect with their family members who are no longer with us. There’s no need for the two of you to be on red alert, got it?”

Ronan looked like he was about to object, but an elbow from Tennyson stopped him. Jude nodded, but Cope knew he would be on guard nonetheless, just like how he’d planned to help Augusta even though Jude asked him to stay out of it. Tit for tat, Cope thought.

Opening the door to the Lincoln compartment, Cope saw what looked like half of the Union Army lined up at attention along the left side of the car. He stumbled back a step, with Jude catching him.
