Chapter Twenty-One

Monday afternoon, when she came downstairs after putting the twins down for their nap, she found two aerial maps on the kitchen table. “What are these?”

Durango continued loading the dishwasher. “Jeff called. He’ll be here in thirty minutes, and you’ll need the maps to show him where to lay out the new boundary fences you want.”

“Makes sense to me.” She picked up the first one, studying the view. To her amazement, she saw a clear trail along the back line. He must have run the bulldozer around the property at some point, and that made things easier for Jeff. They’d be able to drive across country instead of walking. “What’s the plan for you and the girls?”

“They’ll probably want to ride Cinnamon. After that, snacks, cartoons, and horsey chores. I’ll put a roast in the slow cooker and then it won’t matter how long it takes you and Ransom.”

She nodded. “And you don’t have issues with us going out alone?”

“I trust you, baby, just like you’ve always trusted me. We don’t cheat on each other. We never did.”

She eyed him while he did the domestic routine, finding the slow cooker, taking a roast out of the freezer. It’d take a little longer to cook if he didn’t thaw it first, but it’d be done by early evening when all of them were ready for supper. “What did you call it when I dated other guys if it wasn’t cheating?”

“You always had a curfew, and you never set anyone up to get his head busted.”

She debated telling him that she’d kissed a few frogs over the years. None of those guys compared to him in or out of the sack, but he didn’t need to hear how wonderful he was in bed. Besides, it wasn’t like she’d have slept with anyone else, not even Zeb Steele. “You do realize the road runs two ways, don’t you, Hawke?”

“Hearing you use the microphone to stop mid-song when you were onstage to tell some gal to keep her hands to herself cured any doubts I had.”

“Just checking.” She watched him put the roast in the pot, top it with onion soup mix, and crossed the room to find him a small cutting board. “Use this for the yellow onion you’re going to chop, so I don’t have to deal with the smell on the big one when I want to bake. Anything else?”

“The warnings were better than the alternatives.” He followed directions. “Granted, Pop never complained when you did an entire set of Loretta Lynn songs.”

“He likes classic country. I told him to hire a bouncer to keep out the slut contingent or have them arrested, but he and Dick O’Connell said there weren’t any laws against being sleazy.”

Durango grinned appreciatively, then went to answer the back door. While he was distracted, she topped the roast with mushroom soup, then refilled the can with a cup of strong coffee and added it to the pan. The addition drew his attention when he returned, followed by Jeff.
