Cope

Knowing how hard it was being stuck at home with sick kids, Cope stopped at Lobster Charlie’s on his way home at lunchtime. He picked up food for Tennyson, Kaye, and himself before heading to McDonald’s to get Happy Meals for the kids.

Cope’s first stop was at home to see how Wolf was doing. His son had been snoozing on the sofa while Kaye watched her stories. He was almost glad his son was sleeping, which gave him the excuse to stay with Tennyson. Even though Ten hadn’t seen the box, he wanted to get his friend’s take on it. Everly’s, too, if her gift offered any information.

“Hey! Aren’t you a sight for sore eyes,” Ten said when he opened the door.

“Hi, Uncle Cope.” Everly waved from a mountain of blankets on the sofa. The little girl wore an Ariel nightgown with her strawberry blonde hair piled into a messy topknot. “Did you get me chicky nugs?”

“I sure did, with barbecue sauce and ketchup for your fries.” Cope set the box down on the coffee table. “How are you feeling?”

“A lot better. I’m still coughing, but I’m going back to school tomorrow. I miss Woofie, Aurora, and the rest of my class.”

“Wolf misses you too.” Cope headed for the kitchen, where he could hear Ten unpacking the food.

“You got chowder too,” Ten practically sang. “I’ve practically eaten my weight in PBJ and chicken noodle soup over the last few days.”
