We waited until Carey had returned from school before asking Allie if we could head out for a quick errand.

“Oh, go ahead,” Allie said. “I know you’re up to something, both of you.”

“Three of us,” added Mart from behind us. “Don’t think I’ve forgotten my promise.”

“Promise?” Jia gave me a questioning look.

“He said that he’d glue himself to me like a shadow to stop me getting into trouble.” It probably wasn’t wise to try another break-in attempt, but at least I wasn’t acting alone this time around.

I still hadn’t heard from Drew, except for his brief text to say good morning earlier. I tried not to think too hard about it. He had a lot going on, after all, and now the burden of the investigation entirely fell upon his head. I wondered if he’d spoken to the witches himself yet.

Allie waved us off when we left the inn. I doubted she’d be happy if she found out we planned to break into the witches’ headquarters again, but she wasn’t part of the coven herself, and she knew why I’d gone against the leader the way I had. She’d also paid the price for my actions against Mina Devlin by being unable to find a replacement bartender until Jia had come along, but it wasn’t until yesterday that I’d realised the true extent of their lingering faith in their former leader.

“Allie will be calling me a bad influence on you by the week’s end,” I remarked to Jia as we made our way to the bridge. “Especially as this is my third attempt to get into the witches’ headquarters this week.”

“You really want to break into the place in broad daylight?” Mart drifted above the water, keeping pace with us.

“Got a better idea?” I strode across the bridge. “With magic, we don’t need to wait for the cover of night, besides.”

“What did you use to get in last time?” Jia asked me.

“An unseen spell,” I said. “I also undid the booby traps on their door, but they must have heard me anyway.”

“Can we get into the storeroom without walking through the lobby?”

Without my shadows? Unlikely. “I could try a transportation spell instead, but I’ve never actually been inside the storeroom before, and it seems a waste of energy when it’s only a short distance from the front door. Besides, they’ll see the flash of light.”

“Then we need them to be distracted.”

“I can create a diversion upstairs,” Mart offered. “Knock a few things over. They probably don’t know I exist, so I can sow some confusion and make sure nobody’s downstairs while you two do your thing.”

Jia eyed him. “Are you sure?”

A grin spread across his face. “I haven’t wreaked any chaos in ages. This will be fun.”

“If you say so.” I heaved out a breath. “Right, we need to work out the timing. Mart, you’ll have a head start. Once you have everyone on the upper floor, come and give us a signal, and we’ll run in.”

“With unseen charms on, in case anyone comes downstairs,” added Jia.
