MakerCAM

MakerCAM is a free, fully functional, browser-based CAM software with basic built-in CAD functionality (see Figure 6-1). You can draw circles, rectangles, rounded rectangles, and polygons, and do basic vector editing.

MakerCAM can import an SVG file, create toolpaths, and save those toolpaths as a set of machining instructions or a G-code file (explained in detail in Chapter 8) to your local computer.

Note

MakerCAM isn’t perfect — it has design limitations that may cause some people to outgrow its functionality at some point. However, it’s free and works rather well, so it’s the perfect CAM program for getting started if you don’t already have a solution.
