The launch of Battleship D (‘Ersatz Elsass’) took place at the Marinewerft in Wilhelmshaven on 3 October 1936. The ship was named by the widow of Felix Schultz, commander of the armoured cruiser Scharnhorst, who was killed when his ship was sunk at the Battle of the Falklands on 8 December 1914. After the chocks are released the hull begins its first journey down the Number 2 slipway towards the shipyard basin.

The launching proceeds as planned and the Scharnhorst slides down towards the shipyard basin in Wilhelmshaven. Among the invited guests were also NSDAP (Nazi party) members who are gathered in a separate sector next to the slipway. In this picture they can be seen on the left of the Number 2 slipway.
