Paper Mill, Roslyn. Author’s photo.

Washington described in his diary of the work at the “Grist and two Paper Mills” as being carried on “with spirit and profit.” “The 1773 Paper Mill was established by Hendrick Onderdonk. It was the first paper mill in New York State and one of the first in the Colonies. Paper manufacturing had been suppressed in the Colonial era and import duties were high.”179 Paper was at first made from rags, and papermaking was a very profitable business. It is believed that this mill of Onderdonk’s operated throughout the Revolutionary War. By the time President George Washington visited the owner, Hendrick Onderdonck, in 1790, there were two paper mills being operated by the man.180
