Answer: When turbidity currents rush downslope off the continental shelf, they are well-mixed slurries with a wide range of clast sizes. When they reach the bottom they lose velocity (and energy) very quickly, and drop their load. The coarsest grains settle first; the finest particles remain in suspension, eventually settling out on top. The result is a graded bed.

Now take the Self-Test to check your understanding and memory of the concepts and terms presented in this chapter.
