Board Games and Books

We wandered back to our camper and decided to make use of the shower house. Pulling our towels out of the trucks, we were super not excited to find out that they didn't have a magic solar powered hot shower down the hall from Grandma's kitchen. It was a cold, scummy campground shower. But at least the stinky bits got rinsed off.

None of us felt like being outwardly social or trying to make friends here, so we were just walking back to the camper when Buddha mentioned the board games in the office. There were board games in the office? How did none of us see them? He led the way in and pointed to a book shelf, and there they were. Board games, puzzles, card games, and books and magazines. We scooped up Monopoly and Sorry. Mike said he didn't feel like playing and found a book.

We checked out the camper and decided it wasn't really big enough to play in, so we headed back to the barn to grab a table. Mike wandered over to the playground and plopped in a swing with his book. We didn't even make fun of him for ditching us. We all knew this was tough on him, so him wanting alone time was cool. Besides, Mike can be a dick with board games. He always finds a way to exploit the rules, but then quotes the rules against you. I'd rather just beat Chris at Monopoly by letting him fail at all his cross-dealings.

Let's face it. It was a weekend camping trip. We were treating it that way, and it was treating us that way. We needed a break, and we got one. We were briefly interrupted by a guy who stopped by wanting to show off his latest thing. He gave us a story about how he was a history buff and learned how to make all kinds of things. He offered us a giant cracker that he called hard-tack. He said something about pirates and the civil war (I didn't even know there were pirates in the civil war), but waited until we tried it. Hard was right.

“I bet you didn't think it would taste that good huh?” he asked with a sort of smugness.

We nodded politely as Clark walked in.

“I was just showing the guys here how good hard-tack can be,” he boasted to Clark.

“Yeah – good for a sucking chest wound.” Clark stared at him a second before saying, “Couldn't you add sugar and make cookies? We have kids around here and we aren't quite that desperate yet.”

“Yeah. I'll bet a chest wound would suck,” Chris added after letting little bits of dry giant cracker fall out of his mouth.

“Boys, I don't know what you plan to do about dinner tonight. My cupboard ain't exactly stocked, but I don't want to leave you hanging,” Clark said.

“We should have stuff in our bags,” Dickie answered.

“You still have your bags?” Clark asked, and almost sounded impressed.

“Uh, yeah. You made us pack them.
