Introduction

The story of gender inequality and efforts to overcome the problem is one of individuals and organizations as much as it is of history and chronology. The list of women (and some men) in this long battle is very long, much too lengthy to discuss in a single chapter. The same can be said for the organizations that have been established to overcome the inequities of sexual discrimination. This chapter provides profiles of only a handful of those who have made a difference in the way society thinks about and deals with difference between women and men. Many other worthy profiles could be included if space were available.
