LEARNING FROM A HERO

Even though Jen sometimes rejects the people who want to help because they trigger her or stress her out, it’s important to remember that we can ask for help, especially if we’re going home each day and locking ourselves in our room, refusing to talk to anyone about our problems. Jen’s best friend Patsy Walker (also known as the superhero Hellcat) is insistent on connecting with Jen until she talks. Patsy shows us that it’s a good idea to keep reaching out to friends going through trauma. She extends support to Jen, and even though Jen may not want it, knowing the option is there gives her a reason to reach out to her friend when she does feel okay.

If we do need to deal with struggles on our own, finding hobbies that are healthy and safe are a good way to distract our minds and help us refocus—Jen starts watching shows about baking, which helps her turn her brain off. While it’s not healthy to push away our trauma and deny that it’s a part of us, having an outlet like watching a favorite television show or listening to a favorite album can help take our mind off our troubles.

Superheroes are seen as powerful and confident beings, but sometimes being a superhero can take a toll on one’s mental health. We see Jen address negative thoughts about herself and face memories that are difficult to process, but seeing mental health issues normalized in this way reminds us that even our heroes face issues they need to overcome.
