After breakfast, I venture to my room, find my laptop, and open my completed thesis chapters. The writing seems foreign and immature as I read through what I was so proud of only weeks earlier. A soft knock on the door draws me back to the present. “You awake in there?” Colby says through the door.

“I am, come in.”

“What are you working on?” I close my laptop, embarrassed at the level of incompetency on the screen.

“My doctoral thesis. Reading through it has me questioning my life choices.” He flops on the bed, taking my laptop from me.

“Oh, come on. It can’t be that bad.” He opens the computer and begins reading. I fight the urge to hide underneath the chair from embarrassment. “It’s good!” he says several minutes later. “Although, you need to work on your information on Lycan.”

“You can’t tell me you read it that quickly.”

“Just the werewolf parts.” He smiles. “I can answer any questions you might have.”

“Seriously? Like an interview?”

“Sure.” He lays back on my bed, stretching his long legs to the footboard. “What would you like to know?”

I grab a notebook and pen, ready to take notes. “Okay. I read in multiple books that werewolves need a full moon to change into wolf form. But when Edon and Viktor were fighting, he was in wolf form, and it wasn’t a full moon night.”

“You’ve read too many fantasy books and seen too many sparkly vampire movies. The full moon affects our change but does not demand it. It’s ultimately up to the wolf whether they change into their true form. Edon is Alpha. He can do any damn thing he wants.”

I write his answers, before asking another. “I know the alpha is the strongest of the pack and the others are required to follow him, but how is the alpha chosen?”

“Most alphas are made, not born. Some take over the pack when their father dies, others fight their way to the top and earn the position.” I set my pen down.

“How did Edon become alpha?”

“He’s the exception to the rule.” He pauses. “Edon is the strongest lycanthrope in the southeast, and being alpha is something he never wanted. Our pack has been ripped apart over the years, and he was the only leader able to pull it together and keep it together.” I think back to the bearded man at Viktor’s house. “Why didn’t he want to be alpha?”

“Being alpha is a hard job.” He looks up. “My mother died because he was alpha.”

I’m confused. “What are you saying?”

“Edon’s my father.” I stare at the young werewolf in front of me, not sure what to say.

“Are you the next alpha?”

“Girl, you’ve met me. I’m not alpha material. No, my oldest brother has been groomed since birth to be the next in line. He’s nearly as large as Edon and will be larger by the time he’s ready to take over. No one will question his leadership.” He slaps his thighs. “Ask me more questions.
