If you’re already acquainted with the joys of cycle-touring, then you know that an adventure can be had anywhere – just sling a compass and map into your backpack, pack lightly and get on the road. But don’t worry about donning the lycra: cycling is simply a great way to explore, giving you the freedom and flexibility to cover more ground than you could on foot while slowing down whenever you want. You could try island cycling in France: go to one of the many islands off the French coast such as L’île d’Ouessant in Brittany, and hire a bike for the day. You can get an enormous sense of achievement by cycling the whole way around the island, stopping off wherever takes your fancy.

In Vietnam, get away from the bustling cities and see the countryside by joining the locals on their favourite form of transport – the bicycle. For an easy ride, head to the flatlands of the Mekong Delta, where you pass rice paddies and little villages. If you’re feeling more adventurous, tackle the hills surrounding Hanoi, or even travel the historical Ho Chi Minh trail. This way of touring the country will cost you little more than the price of hiring a bicycle (although booking an organised trip can be fun) and it’s an excellent way of getting to know the friendly and welcoming local people. A cycle tour will get you fit and take you into the heart and soul of the country.
