CHAPTER EIGHT

SPECIFIC, NOT GENERAL

Fight the lie: My specific prayer request isn’t important to God.

I was zoned out, watching the small TV located in the corner of the nail salon. I had been making appointments to see a specific nail tech at this salon for four years since moving to Dallas. She was precious. She was a petite, soft-spoken women with an eye for excellence. Some days, when she looked at her finished product and didn’t like what she saw, she would redo my nails.

I love to get my nails done. There ain’t no long, gaudy, pointy polished nail that I don’t like. Bring them all on! The crazier the color, the more I like them. Don’t judge; I’m a nail lover, and I don’t care who knows it. My nails have been a topic of many conversations over the years. Some women, who don’t find the nail polishing process a necessity in their lives, have rolled their eyes at me, especially when they find out I get my nails done every two weeks without fail.

The amount of comments I’ve received through social media after posting a video about my nails has both surprised me and made me laugh out loud. I’ve been told that I have a “Jezebel spirit,” because one day I chose black as a color. (Who made up that term?) Others have said they can’t take the Word of God seriously coming from someone who gets her nails done. (Really people? Get some freedom in Christ!) Others have begged to know what color I am wearing so they can ask for it at their nail salon. This question is hard because, at my salon, the colors are numbered. I reply with “E28,” which is absolutely no help to the commenter. One girl recently (this one was one of my favorites) said that she had a game going to guess what nail color I would have on in each video. The other day one lady tweeted me and said she needed some inspiration for her nail color and asked me to take a picture of my nails and tweet her back. I’ve been told to change the color, cut my nails shorter, change the shape—all in an effort to help me, I guess. The bottom line is, I love getting my nails done and have gotten them done since I was fourteen years old when the airbrushed french manicure was all the rage. Ah, the good ol’ days.

That particular day, as I was enjoying my acrylic manicure and staring blankly at the TV, my relaxation was suddenly stolen from me when my nails started burning. Now, this had been a somewhat regular thing, but that day, my nails were on fire. “That is burning badly! Can you stop for a second?” I asked the nail tech. She applied a liquid chemical on my nails in an effort to stop the burning and went on with the process.

Later that night, something strange happened. The skin around my nail beds began to slowly peel.
