They were pissed, except for Helga, who was still amused, and Gal was pretty sure she suspected there was more to him and Liam than fucking. He was grateful she hadn’t said anything, and he hoped she wasn’t planning to. Liam still hadn’t made his decision about coming out as mates to the pride, and that was okay with Gal. Gal might want to scream it from the rooftops because he thought Liam deserved it and was proud to be Liam’s mate, but he understood there was more to the situation than that. He needed the pride’s trust. He needed them to go along with what he decided. That was the only way the pride would get better, and he wanted it, not just because it was his job, but also because this was Liam’s home.

“We accept your help,” Helga said.

Gal was tempted to cover his ears because he already knew how the other elders would react, but he kept his hands on the desk.

Geoff and Sandra turned against Helga. “We haven’t talked yet, you can’t make this kind of decision for all of us,” Sandra said.

Helga crossed her arms over her chest and arched a brow. “I have a hard time believing you would choose to have the pride disbanded rather than going along with what Alpha Brennan is saying. Because that’s what our options are. Either we accept him as our alpha, or the council disbands us. I don’t know about you, but I’m not eager to leave this house. It might be coming down on our heads, but it’s still my home. I don’t want things to stay this way.”

“We don’t have to accept this,” Geoff said. “The council wasn’t even a thing fifteen years ago, and we did just fine without them. They have no right to destroy the pride, and I won’t allow it.”

Helga grinned. “Exactly. That means you accept Gal as our alpha, correct?” She looked at Gal, ignoring the gobsmacked expression on Geoff’s face. “There you have it. I’ll organize a pride meeting for today. It’s not like anyone has anything else to do. I don’t envy your task of finding everyone a job.”

Gal chuckled. He really liked Helga. “It won’t be easy, but it’s just one of the tasks I have. It’s not the first time I’ve had to do this, so don’t worry. I’ll talk to everyone before making any kind of decision and find out their strengths and what they want to do. I’m not a monster. I’m here to help, and I mean that. I won’t force anyone to do anything they don’t want to. But this is a pride. Everyone needs to contribute, and I’ll make sure they do.”

Helga nodded. “You need to lay down the law just like you did with us. Honestly, I don’t think things are as bad as you probably think. While it’s true that some pride members are anything but happy about having you here, most of them are cautious and wary, but they’re not against you.
