Chapter Eleven
Gabe visited with Mondo at the rehab facility in which he had been residing for the last month. He had yet to fully regain the ability to walk on his own but everyone was overjoyed that he had begun the road to recovery, no matter how slow and tedious the journey was projected to be.
Mondo had roused out of his coma without memory of the shooting. Gabe had grilled him harder than the police had, listening closely for anything pertinent to reveal itself from Mondo’s foggy recollections. He itched to make someone pay for what had been done to his friend and if his hunch was right, they were also the same people responsible for that episode with Alexis.
After leaving Mondo, Gabe headed to the shooting range to let off some steam. The cool metal of the Smith and Wesson .357 Magnum had never felt better in his grasp. He had just unloaded an entire clip into the head region of the paper outline of a man when he got Alexis’ text. He checked the time; it was well after 9 p.m. and he frowned with suspicion as he read the words:
Come over, we need to talk.
Gabriel hesitated. With him and Alexis, “talking” could go either way. He didn’t have anything on the agenda for after the shooting range so he decided to go and see what was on her mind. After sending her a response that said that he was on his way, he added five bullet holes into the new paper target’s heart region and then a sixth right in the middle of its forehead — for good measure.
Gabriel was already a nice shot but practice never hurt anybody. Something told him that before long, he would have to plug a real body. And when the time came, he would be ready.

Alexis thought about it for the twentieth time. Sitting on the edge of her bed she applied lotion to her long, slender legs while listening to Toni Braxton’s cd, Secrets. It was one of Toni’s older albums but its message was still just as valid as it had been back in 1996. And while the emotional ballads fed Alexis’ heartbroken side with lyric after relevant lyric, it did little to take her mind away from her current predicament — and she desperately needed that.
Alexis knew that she had to stop with all of the gloom and doom. She needed to hear something more upbeat and lively and she knew that her girl, Beyoncé, wouldn’t let her down. While listening to Bey’s most recent and unexpectedly dropped ‘visual cd’, Alexis found a favorite song titled, “Drunk in Love”.
Feeling buzzed off of a couple of glasses of Chardonnay, Alexis was not quite drunk. And thanks to Jalil and his treachery, she was far from in love. Still, the song made her yearn for the company of a man and Jalil was totally out of the question. She didn’t want to see his face for a few days, until she could think about him without wanting to cry or scream.
