Chapter 21: Gabriel

It was a lair, all right.

I knew the layout of this type of lair well. Above ground were apartments for lease, serving as a front. One such apartment, usually the penthouse, was reserved for the vampires as a place to work or relax. The hidden underground facility was where the vampires themselves rested; using the apartment for that purpose was risky, since vampires slept deeply and were vulnerable when in that state.

Whoever built this place had money.

And the smell that came up from below the floor was potent, strong enough to overpower the constant sweet aroma that came from Lana and that drove my Black Blood on edge. It was an old scent of death—exhumed corpses.

The stink of fledglings…

I sensed Lana’s eyes on me as I searched the elevator floor. She stood there in a pair of tight jeans, a halter top, a small backpack, and tennis shoes, and even with my mind on the hunt, everything about her was hauntingly distracting. Even her casual clothes brought out those delicious curves, clinging to her skin in a way that flushed my veins with the desire to claim her in the most sinful of ways. Her words in the bathroom echoed in my mind.

Take me. I need to feel you inside me.

God, how I wanted to.

“What are you doing?”

I blinked and looked into her eyes. Her smile was knowing, her lips slightly parted, and the beast inside growled at my obsessing over her.

Bringing her was stupid. How could I trust her? She was a thief and a temptress, and I would not be the first of the O’Connors to fall for the wiles of her ilk.

I took out my frustration with a glare that wiped the smile from her face. “I am looking for a way out of the elevator, so I can climb down.”

“Down?”

“Into the cellar,” I hissed and returned to inspecting the floor.

“You mean like this?” she said.

I looked up, then followed the direction in which her finger pointed.

There was a hatch in the cabin’s ceiling.

Of course, idiot. Hatch at the top.

I grunted affirmation and rose to my feet, towering over her. “You should go back to the car,” I said.

She crossed her arms, and I cursed the way they pushed up those beautiful breasts. I wanted to bite her. “We’ve been over this,” she said. “I’m coming with you.”

“You’re climbing down an elevator shaft?” I made a face. “I doubt it. But if you’re adamant on risking yer life, go right the feck ahead.” I waved her away, then rose on my toes and pulled the lever to unlock the hatch. It gave a tired sigh, and the hatch fell open, revealing inky black darkness above it.

The stench grew stronger at once, and I crinkled my nose at it. “There are fledglings down there,” I said. “You really would be—”

“Enough already!” she said.

With a swift and limber move, she pushed past me. She hopped up on her tennis shoes, then grabbed the ledge. I crossed my arms and grinned.
