CHAPTER ELEVEN

Asher

Asher stared up at the ceiling above his bed, the morning sun taunting him after a restless night of tossing and turning.

The ceiling was coffered, as if dozens of tiny beams criss-crossed one another. He wondered how much time a technique like that took to plan and construct. Were they tiny beams all pieced together or several long beams fitted perfectly?

It felt relaxing to wonder about the ceiling after spending hours awake, tossing and turning, thinking about that kiss.

And now, he was daydreaming about how the dark wood beams were the same color as Caleb’s eyes.

He had deconstructed each millisecond that led up to it. The way Caleb had looked determined one moment before leaning into him, or the way Caleb had taken Asher’s lip gently in his. A tiny gesture, but a promise of something more. A revelation of what could happen.

He had come on the trip wanting to be utterly professional.

Now he was making out with one of the most famous men in the world.

What had he been thinking?

It had started with that silly hug on the piano bench. Caleb had let his defenses down. His mask strings had gone up in flames.

Asher had desperately wanted to make that moment last forever. He had stiffened, afraid that if he moved at all, he might never get a chance to hold him again.

It wasn’t that Caleb reminded him of a wild animal that he might startle. He hated that analogy. Caleb was a strong man, not some chipmunk they had scared off the path during a hike.

No, it was as if he and Caleb had been building something tenuous, weaving threads of friendship — maybe more? Was something there or had he been caught up in the feelings of the night before?

A text notification dinged from his phone, startling his reverie.

He glanced at it.

Nico: Want to chat? We miss you!

He smirked and hit the FaceTime button. Who was we?

Nic accepted the call and Asher immediately saw that it was Ethan, Zac, and Nic. The entire band, except for him. His insides clenched in a mixture of jealousy and homesickness.

The men in the video began to yell his name and throw their hands in the air, exclaiming how much they missed him, as if it had been months and not merely a week.

“Do you live in Colorado now?” Ethan said with a mock frown.

“Are you ever coming back?” Zac chimed in, his red curls.

“He’s never coming back, you guys,” Nico said with teasing solemnity.

“Hey, did you guys really just call to make me feel bad?” Asher asked, a crease appearing in his brow.

“Yep!” The three men shouted, laughing again.

Asher pretended to cover his eyes with his hand. "Not fair,” he said in a mock-pout.

"What happened to your wrist?” Nico asked, narrowing his eyes.

“I scratched myself on my guitar strings. Caleb patched me up,” Asher explained.

“Wow. He didn’t like, call a servant to fetch a medic to do it?” Nico joked.

“Hey now,” Asher said, raising his eyebrows to give him a Look.
