"Get away from me," Belle grumbled. She was half asleep when she swatted at the fly attempting to land on her nose. Again, the fly attacked, and this time she moaned and rubbed her nose.
"Belle," she heard her name cutting through her groggy haze. Her eyes fluttered open.
"What the hell?"
Her vision focused on Travis who was chuckling and holding a feather in his hand.
She rubbed her eyes with the back of her hands. "Where'd you get that daâ¦that feather?"
"It was sticking out of the side of your pillow, just begging me to pluck it out." Travis chuckled.
"Well, my, ain't you the clever one?" Belle sniped.
"Get up, Belle, it's almost suppertime."
"I wasn't sleeping." Belle shot up and swung her legs over the side of the bed.
"Belle, you know I don't hold with lying. You fell asleep and don't want to admit I was right about you needing a nap."
"So what if you were right?" Belle rubbed her sweaty palms across her thighs. "But I still have the right to make that decision for myself."
"Sure you do, Belle," Travis raised an eyebrow, "as long as you are willing to take the consequences.
Belle's face burned. "I want my clothes. Now."
Travis sat in the overstuffed green chair. He steepled his fingers. "You can have them back, but you have ta ask nicely."
Belle seared him with her eyes and sucked in a deep breath. Her hands rolled up in fists. "May, I have my clothes, please?" Her words hissed from her mouth.
Travis stared at her for a moment. "I suppose that's as nice as you can ask. Here." He tossed his saddle bags to the bed. "If I wasn't pressed for time, and if I didn't need to get some food in you, I would make you ask again in a kinder tone."
Belle huffed and began to yank her clothes from the bag. She sat for a moment clinging to the bunched clothes that lay in her lap. "Well?"
"Well, what?"
"Aren't you going to turn around so I can dress."
Travis laughed." Belle, I saw you in your undergarments when I took your clothes, and don't forget I saw you when you were taking a bath, and then I saw everyâ
"So, I don't deserve any respect. You keep reminding me, I'm Belle, a woman. Oh, never mind, just shut up, I shoulda known you weren't no gentleman." Belle was confused at her own outburst. Why should she care if he treated her like a lady or not?
Travis leaned forward and smiled. "Honey, since when does Fury care about gentlemen?"
Belle let out a guttural sound, followed by a string of muttering.
"All right, all right." Travis stood up. "I'll turn around, but I admit I kinda like this more ladylike side of you."
Belle stuck her tongue out at Travis when his back was turned then proceeded to jam her legs into her pants. "All right, turn around." She sat on the bed, shoving her feet into her boots. "Let's go," Belle said as she stood.
Travis nodded as he made his way to the door.
