Taking his hands from Nicole just about killed him. His heart thumped hard. Phantom pain circled behind the wall of his chest. His fingers curled as his muscles locked. Vyroth closed his eyes. He didn’t want to let her go. He wanted her to remain where she was—snug in his embrace, nestled against him, her cheek pressed to his. But as she turned in his arms and set her hands on his chest, he knew what she wanted.

Didn’t take a genius to figure out.

Without words, she asked for space. A little breathing room. Time to think about her reaction, and what was happening to her body with him so close.

Her confusion pained him.

He longed to explain, but knew it was too soon. Too soon for her to hear about energy-fuse. Too soon for her to accept the magical bond between a Dragonkind male and his mate. Too soon for her comprehend the power of the connection.

So, when she applied pressure, pressing him back, Vyroth shifted without hesitation. He murmured her name. Eyelashes shielding her gaze, she sidestepped, moving from between him and the countertop. The gap between him and his female widened. His heart reacted, contracting as he forced himself to remain perfectly still.

Following her retreat wasn’t a good idea, but…

Goddess help him.

He wanted her so badly. Needed his hands on her skin. Yearned for the taste of her on his tongue and her surrounding him. The instant he met her, she’d become his addiction. Now, the idea of her in his bed, splayed in supplication beneath him, taunted him. Haunting every waking moment.

She moved further away.

His hands twitched.

Vyroth held his ground, refusing to pursue. Accepting him was Nicole’s decision. Hers alone to make.

Rushing her wasn’t an option. He didn’t want to be that male. Pushy and self-serving. Needy and impatient. He’d already taken once—when he’d fed inside the prison cell. He couldn’t do it again. He must think of her first. She mattered more than the primal need driving him. No matter how desperate his desire for her, he refused to force the issue.

Nicole would come to him when ready. Willingly, or not at all.

For the first time in his life, he prayed energy-fuse was as strong as he’d been led to believe. He shouldn’t doubt it. He’d heard about the intense bond all his life. Read about it too. Countless volumes in the lair library told interesting tales on the subject. Not that he’d needed to flip through those volumes to understand. Not with a living example inside the Scottish lair.

His aunt and uncle had provided all the evidence he required. Vyroth remembered watching the pair as a child and knew the gifts of energy-fuse—fierce loyalty, unfailing love, the savage need to be together… all the time.

He already felt the heady force of it for Nicole.

He saw the same need for him reflected in her eyes.

Hope spiraled through him. Her attraction to him—and his to her—was unmatched. The bond had taken hold. Already burned deep, wide and true. Was simply too powerful for either of them to resist for long.
