Head warring with her heart, she breathed in as Kruger breathed out. Shared air. Shared space. Shared knowledge that something big was happening—a thing so huge Ferguson felt it overflow and tumble through her. Tendrils of heat unfurled low in her belly. A shock wave detonated inside her mind, opening channels, unlocking secret passageways, revealing hidden recesses.

Ordinary fell beneath the wave, revealing extraordinary, laying the truth bare.

She wanted him.

Really wanted him.

Not in a sleep-with-him-once-never-see-him again throwaway night. In a longing-to-make-him-hers-keep-him-forever kind of way. The most dangerous type. The sort that gave a girl ideas. Which always ended badly—at least for her. With heartbreak followed by five days of excessive brownie eating and the emptying of tissue boxes during a bad movie marathon.

Kruger kissed her again, softly, sweetly, inviting her in, obliterating good sense, killing her will to resist, making her tingle in interesting places.

“Kruger,” she whispered, struggling to find firm footing.

“Right here, lass.”

“Shouldn’t we…”

“What?”

“I don’t know—talk?”

His mouth brushed hers again.

A tremor shook her, clawing through her resolve. Talking first, before she went any further, was a good idea—the best, given their rough start, his plans for The White Hare, but… God. She didn’t want him to put her down and back away. Didn’t want to be reasonable. For once, she wanted to take instead of give. Be selfish. Be irresponsible. Be wild, live a little instead of denying what she needed.

She should pump the brakes. Stop and rethink. Change course by asking Kruger to give her some space. Ignoring the problem wouldn’t make it go away. Backing off was the smart thing to do. The best way forward, given—

“Fazleima.”

Pitch perfect, the gorgeous undertones of his voice dove beneath her skin, making her twitch like a tuning fork. The issues on the forefront of her mind drifted into the background. The heat in Kruger’s eyes did the rest, arresting her bid for self-preservation.

God help her. She couldn’t do it, couldn’t tell him no or deny herself the pleasure. The urge to know him was simply too strong, bubbling up, wiping her slate clean as curiosity took hold. She wanted to know everything about him: his wants and needs. His hopes and dreams. What drove him. What hurt him. What he looked like when he woke each day and went to bed each night.

Instinct urged her to lean in, so she did, leaving safe behind as she raised her hand and cupped his jaw. Day-old stubble rasped against her skin. The full curve of his bottom lip stroked the pad of her fingertip. His breath hitched. She didn’t stop, tracing his features with an attention to detail, memorizing him, feeling his intensity, loving the strength of his arms around her.

Desire fired in his dark eyes.

Caught fast, she kissed him the same way he had her, softly, answering the questions he asked without saying a word—Do you want me, can I come closer, will you accept me…

Am I enough for you?

That last one sealed her fate.

She knew what being unwanted felt like, understood the vulnerability and the pain.
