Disruptive behavior
Disruptive behavior can be described as a chronic pattern of contentious, threatening, intractable, litigious behavior that significantly deviates from the cultural norm.19 Such behavior creates a work environment that interferes with the efficient functioning of the healthcare team impacting patient safety and the delivery of quality care.19,20 The word “chronic” is used to describe a habitual pattern of behavior as opposed to the occasional outburst from a stressed and overworked physician. The distinguishing characteristic of this physician is chronic malcontent and frequent ebullitions of anger resulting in inappropriate outbursts towards nurses, technicians, and patients.19
