An image that contains no sharp edge detail (and no edge discontinuities when tiled) can be described with low spatial frequencies only. The Fourier spectrum of such an image will have non-zero values only near its center.

Inverse Fourier transformation of complex spatial frequency domain data produces complex spatial domain data. We normally view only the magnitude of this complex data. Raw MRI data is an example of a complex spatial frequency domain data set.
