The logic High output signal of 555 Timer could be terminated by applying negative-going pulse to the reset pin (pin-4) of the IC. For example, if td is designed as 10 ms, the logic High state could be forced to change to logic Low state before 10 ms by applying reset signal to pin-4. If reset requirement does not exist, the reset pin should be connected to VCC to avoid false triggering.

7.6 Monostable Multivibrators

Although Timer 555 IC could be used for monostable operation, standard ICs are available as non-retriggerable and retriggerable monostable multivibrators with added features. The devices are known as one-shot devices. ICs 74121 and 74123 are examples of devices for non-retriggerable and retriggerable monostable multivibrators respectively. The ICs have Schmitt trigger inputs to output jitter-free signals. The operations and the applications of the ICs are presented.
