I had to be a fool to think that Farrod or Tyra wouldn’t tell my father that Monty was beating on me. I was sitting on my sofa, finally out in Queens where I could get some rest from the glares, ridicule, embarrassment, and smirks, when my father surprised us both when he knocked lightly on the door. I hadn’t seen him in about a month.
“Hi, Daddy!” I said nervously, because I knew that he was only here for one reason. He had never come to my house before so for him to come unannounced I already knew what it was.
“Where’s that punk motherfucka!” he yelled.
“Daddy, what is wrong?” I said, playing dumb, trying to close the door.
“You letting this punk beat on you? Pack your shit and let’s go now!” my father yelled.
Monty came out of the bedroom.
“She ain’t going nowhere, get out my house.”
“Look, you fucking punk, you think because you’re putting your dick in my daughter you own her? If you ever so much as yell at her again I’ll fucking kill you.”
“Daddy, I have this under control.”
Monty pushed me to the side and stood toe-to-toe with my father. “I don’t like threats, old man.”
“What are you going to do about it, bitch?” my father said.
Monty did the unthinkable and snuffed my father. I was floored.
I pushed him, and in a rage he smacked me to the wall. “Nobody comes here disrespecting me, you crazy?” Monty yelled.
“Daddy, get up!” I said, pulling my father up. Daddy and Monty went blow for blow until Daddy finally knocked Monty out cold on his ass. I began to cry. This was going all wrong.
“Daddy, you can’t just come to my house with this drama, I can handle myself!” I yelled.
“Carin, what are you doing letting some man beat on you?”
“Daddy, we had a few fights, so what!”
“A fight and abuse are two different things, Carin, and from what I heard from his own mother you have been getting your ass beat for a minute now. Yes, I called his mother and she told me everything! She said that this man beats on you damn near every fucking day. Carin, baby, you are going home now. I’m not leaving you here.”
“All of a sudden you care? Where were you when I needed you back then, huh? Don’t put on your cape now, coming in my house telling me how to run my relationship. I need you to leave, Daddy, now!”
“I knew I didn’t like this motherfucka for a reason. Get your shit. Let’s go! You got him brainwashing you and shit. Let’s go!”
Monty began to get up.
“You weren’t raised like this!”
“She wasn’t raised at all, especially not by your fucking ass. Now you wanna come save the fucking day?” Monty said.
“I am fine. You need to leave now before it goes down up in here. Leave!” I said.
“You think I’m leaving you here to deal with this clown? Let’s go now and I’m not going to tell you again. I didn’t bring you out here for this shit!” he said, grabbing me roughly by the arm.
