Whatever method you use to study the Bible, take time each day to chew on a few verses. There are few things more exhilarating than feeling God speak directly to a situation in your life right now through words that were penned thousands of years ago. His Word is living and active. Experience it for yourself, and you’ll understand what Jesus meant when He said we live by God’s Word, not by food.

Memorize—Yes You Can!

As we study God’s Word, specific verses will strike us to the heart, and we think, I really want to remember that. And as we discussed in chapter 3, when we memorize God’s Word, the Spirit of God brings those verses to mind when we need them most. Remember that the Sword of the Spirit, God’s Word, is what we use to ward off temptation, but that’s rather difficult to do when we don’t have it handy. That’s why we’re called to hide God’s Word in our hearts (Psalm 119:11).

Before you think, Oh, I could never memorize Bible verses! I have a terrible memory! let me assure you that I do too. In fact, I used that excuse for many years of my adult life, until one day I was helping my toddler learn a Bible verse for her Sunday school class, and I memorized it with her! This phenomenon happened the next week, and the next, and the next, until I realized my problem wasn’t that I couldn’t memorize Scripture—my problem was that I hadn’t intentionally pursued memorizing Scripture.

Memorizing Scripture takes effort and intentionality, but it’s neither impossible nor is it a waste of time.5 The trick is to select passages that have meaning and relevance to what you’re facing at the time. If you’re in a battle to overcome food fixation, then arm yourself with the Sword of the Spirit by memorizing Scriptures that speak to that particular stronghold. Then use temptations as opportunities to recall those verses to mind and use them to speak God’s truth into your life, much like Jesus did in His wilderness temptations.

No one ever taught me how to memorize Scripture, so in my “I-can’t-memorize” days, I would sit down with a verse and repeat the whole verse over and over again, growing frustrated with my inability to recite it back after ten sets of repetition. Perhaps you’ve experienced similar frustration.

But when I began memorizing Bible verses with my toddler, I went about it entirely differently. I divided the verses into short phrases. I used silly hand motions, and even tried singing a little tune. I would say a part and she would say it back to me, and pretty soon I found that neither of us needed promptings as we had quickly committed the verse to memory. Potty-training time became our Bible verse time, and over the course of a few weeks she learned two valuable skills, and I had discovered my memory wasn’t as bad as I thought it was.
