Highlights of Chubu

The terrain of the Chubu (central) region of Honshu varies dramatically, from rugged coastline to volcanic mountain ranges, including the Japan Alps National Park (Chubu Sangaku Kokuritsu Koen). With the exception of Japan’s tallest peak, Mount Fuji, all of Japan’s loftiest mountains are in Chubu. Some villages nestled in the Japan Alps retain much of their traditional architecture, especially in Takayama and Shirakawa-go, providing a unique look at mountain life both past and present. The former castle town of Kanazawa boasts one of Japan’s most spectacular gardens and Edo-era attractions. See chapter 3 for a suggested itinerary for these three towns.
