BUILDING AIRCRAFT

Tina Hill began work at North American Aviation in Inglewood in 1943, soon after she arrived from Texas. She was twenty-four years old, with a husband in the army overseas. After a one-month course in riveting, she was placed in Department 17.

They had fifteen or twenty departments, but all the Negroes went to Department 17 because there was nothing but shooting and bucking rivets. You stood on one side of the panel and your partner stood on this side, and he would shoot the rivets with a gun and you’d buck them with the bar.

The same year, in San Diego, two high school teachers decided to spend their summer vacation working in the main plant at sprawling Consolidated Aircraft. Inspired by a mix of patriotism, curiosity, and the desire to earn some good money, Constance Bowman and Clara Marie Allen made new friends, built B-24 bombers, and found out they could do harder physical work than they had ever done before.
