CHAPTER 10

HOME SWEET HOME

The party posse was now a consistent group. Wednesdays and Friday, we’d go out and then return to the mansion for a rendezvous. Sunday fun day meant all day by the pool, then a group dinner with some of Hef’s close friends, some of whom had been coming to the mansion for years. We’d watch a premiere of a new movie release in the movie room around 7:00 p.m., and then Iz, Lana, Renee, Sheila, and I would go home. It was good to get used to the routine; it gave us insight into what it would be like to move into the mansion and what the schedule was.

I wanted to get to know Hef better, but it was hard to get his attention or be alone with him. I was happy to become a regular, and he was pleased with what I was offering. Those of us not living there yet would often talk about moving into the mansion. Even though it had never come up in conversation with Hef, Tina who was already living in the house, had been hinting that since the previous girls had left, there were vacancies. We asked one another if we had intentions to move in.

I needed to find out a lot more about what was involved in moving in and what was expected. With the chatter between us girls, we had decided if it was going to happen, we would all do it together.

I suppose I had decided that I wanted to move in, and now I had to figure out how I was going to approach my home situation. During the time I had been spending at the mansion, Chris and I had become distant, but we were still on good terms. I had to sit down and talk to him—and try to come up with the best way to make it work with my son. I think Chris knew all along that it was going to come to this, and he supported me. He also knew what a big deal it was, and he never wanted to hold me back if it’s what I wanted to do.

It seemed easy enough when I thought about it. My son would stay at my apartment during the week and possibly stay with me at the weekends at the mansion. When I talked with Chris about it, he was all for it. I had planned it out in my head that I would stay at the mansion, pick up my son from school every day during the week like I always did, do school homework at home, cook like I always had, and put him to bed. Then, I would return to the mansion once he was asleep. I would tell him that I had to work night shifts at my job. Before I could commit to moving in, I would have to make sure my son was going to be able to come to the mansion and be a part of my other life.
