Danny

I can’t believe Paul, Connor, and Alex are here. And of course, Paul brought the baby and Connor brought Annie. I swallow and tighten my hold on Massimo. Maybe he was right about that hand holding bullshit.

Alex breaks from the group first, then picks me up, half throwing me over his shoulder without paying attention to Massimo. He spins me around until I hit his back. “Fuck! Stop!”

He laughs and drops me down. “Still get dizzy that easily?”

“Well, you’ve gotten slower in your old age.” I point out, trying to steady myself and push down the nausea. “But I’m impressed you can lift me.”

“Oh please. I hit the gym at least three times a week. Gotta give the ladies a reason to come around. You know that.” He winks at me.

I grab his head and bend him over for a noogie, digging my knuckles into his purple hair. “Did you lose your manners when you started dying your hair?”

“Get off; you’re going to mess it up!” He shoves me away and I fall into Mass.

Mass steadies me but doesn’t let me go which gets Paul and Connor’s attention. Paul arches an eyebrow. “Apparently we need some introductions.”

“Paul, Alex, Connor, this is Massimo.” I motion to him.

“I’ve seen you on TV, right?” Connor narrows his eyes.

“Probably.” Massimo offers his hand while his other arm wraps around my waist. “I play for the L.A. Stars.”

“Aunt, D!” Annie reaches me and hugs me tightly. “I missed you.”

I rub her head and feel something strange threaten to strangle me. “I missed you too, sweets.”

After a few more hugs, I’m handed Paul’s baby. Alex and Connor grab our bags and we head towards the front of the airport. I’m not quite sure how to hold baby Billy. Paul corrects me, so I have the one year old on my hip.

He whimpers and I make the sound back at him, which catches his big-eyed attention.

We make sounds back and forth as we walk, but that doesn’t stop me from hearing Paul. “So, how’d you get roped into this?”

“What?” Massimo asks.

“Come on, we all knew that Nick and Danny weren’t together. He and I are Facebook friends and I’ve known he’s out for years. Danny really doesn’t need to pretend.”

“She and I have been together for about seven months.” Mass answers easily. “We’ve kept it hidden because she doesn’t want her career built on my reputation and honestly, it’s not the world’s business.”

“Really?” Paul continues. “Because Danny hasn’t had a relationship hit the six-month mark since she was twenty and when it did hit that mark she couldn’t shut up about it.”

“Yeah, and then two days later, you threatened to kick his ass and he broke up with me.” I remember.

“Look, you don’t have to play these games. We support you no matter what. Why do you have to-”

“Can you take this?” I hand Paul his child.

He adjusts Billy in his arms until the baby is happily cooing. I slide my hand into the back pocket of Massimo’s jeans.
