efforts toward liberation
Matthieu Once we have a sense of the importance of inner freedom and have identified favorable conditions as well as obstacles, the time has come to make effort. We have to prepare ourselves as best we can. Then the important thing will be steadfast perseverance. The tempting promises of a secret of instant happiness are just smoke and mirrors. There is no secret: you have to spend time on it, and even then itâs not easy. But itâs definitely worth the effort!
Christophe For many of us, there is something paradoxical in the association of the two words effort and freedom. We would be more likely to pair freedom and spontaneity, or freedom and ease. Defining the journey to freedom in terms of effort seems like a counterintuitive detour. Itâs like being on a hike and turning in the opposite direction of the one indicated by the compass because the only existing road requires you to make this detour.
Matthieu Imagine an innocent person imprisoned by a dictator. To escape he needs intelligence, discipline, and perseverance. If he is resigned to just sitting there, he could rot in prison. Freedom is gained by the sweat of our brow. If we see this struggle as a laborious chore, we will end up getting tired of it. This effort must be accompanied by joy â a joy born of the certainty that we are heading in the right direction. This is where motivation comes in. Where are we going? Why? For whom? The answer to all these questions turns out to be our wish to become better human beings, to develop our strength of mind, our resilience, our compassion, for ourselves and for all beings. This is the motivation that permits us to persevere amid the ups and downs of our path to freedom.
