By the time they left the cave, night had fallen. They shifted and turned the return trip back into a run, both carrying their clothing in their mouths. Though Frank didn’t bother dressing, Delilah quickly dressed in what remained of her tattered clothes outside the door to the huge house at the other end of the compound from Tess’s house. She had seen the house in passing several times over the past week, noting it was second in size only to Damien’s house, but never realizing it belonged to Frank.

“Wow. This place is huge. You’re abandoning this to live in that small cabin, away from everyone else?

“You should like that idea, given how I’m going to make you scream tonight, over and over.”

“You’re presuming you’re going to fuck me again.”

“Not a presumption. A fact.”

“Ass.”

“There too, if you’d like,” Frank said, grinning.

“Why are you moving out of this house?”

“This is Aloe’s house. I’m only here until my cabin is built, and with all the new shifters arriving every week, our construction crew has been busy building new houses for them. I’ve fallen to the bottom of the list since I have a place to stay. And Aloe doesn’t mind. She’s over in Liam’s pack visiting her sister for a while.” He walked over to the mantel and picked up one of the many frames in the collection on display. “This is Aloe,” he said, holding out a picture of a petite woman with graceful features and long platinum-blonde hair.

“Cute.” A pang of jealousy went through Delilah. This woman had opened her house to Frank. Delilah should be grateful, not jealous, and yet she couldn’t dismiss the idea that another female might have her eye on Frank. Her Frank. “You and she date?”

“No.”

Relief.

“She’s more like a little sister. I’ve known her and her mate Zach since we were kids. Zach is Damien’s brother, or he was, I mean. Got killed by hunters a few years back. At least we think it was hunters. The situation was sketchy.”

Frank got that distant look of his when something was bothering him.

“What’s wrong?” she asked.

“I hope she’s okay. She returned briefly for Hayden’s farewell party, and then she left again abruptly. She didn’t say much while she was here either. She’s always been on the quiet side, but not like this.”

“You worry about her?”

“She’s pack.”

That said it all. Pack meant everything to Frank, which is why being cut off had hurt him so badly. His roots were here. Even though he had no family left, he had shifters who loved and cared about him. She wished he could see it. Either way, this pack—protecting it—was too engrained in Frank. He’d never leave here in a million years.

The more she understood about what plagued him, the more convinced she became that this is where he belonged. Once he confronted his past, and perhaps his alpha, he’d start to heal, but that could only happen if he remained here. She didn’t want Frank caught in the crossfire when her enemies finally caught up to her.
