CHAPTER SIX

Yutani’s car was in the driveway as I arrived home. He was out in the side yard, sitting on the bench in coyote form. I knew it was him by the look in his eyes. He seldom shifted while in the city. Usually, he’d head out into the country for the day and spend time on his own, racing through the woods in his coyote form. He seldom shifted in the presence of any of his friends—not out of embarrassment, but out of his intense need for privacy. But there he was, sitting on the bench, just staring at the rose bush next to him.

I skirted the sidewalk to the front door and headed left, around the house to the side yard. Ember’s home was on two lots, the left a mishmash of gardens, with the house on the right. I knew it had been hard for her to leave this place and move to Annwn, and while the house had been haunted when she bought the place—a gruesome murder had been committed here—it was now comfortable and felt beloved.

“Hey,” I said, opening the gate as I walked through the yard to reach the gardens. I tossed my purse on the ground next to the gate and settled on the bench next to Yutani. Without looking at him, I said, “You okay? Are we okay? What the hell was going on this morning?”

He let out a yip, then yawned and shifted position so that he was able to rest his head on my thigh. I stroked his fur, leaning against the back of the bench. “We talked to the truth-teller. She’s going to meet us at the jail tomorrow.”

Yutani yawned again, then jumped off the bench and padded over to a large huckleberry bush. He crossed behind it, and a moment later, returned in human form, dressed in a pair of jeans with no shirt. I appreciated the view, though now didn’t feel like the time to mention it.

He sat down beside me and leaned forward, resting his elbows on his thighs. “Look…first, let me apologize. I shouldn’t have mouthed off to you like I did this morning and I’m sorry. I was upset, but not at you. But I shouldn’t have taken it out on you. There’s no excuse for that.”

“You’re right—there isn’t an excuse for that.” I paused, then asked, “Why were you upset? If it wasn’t at me, then who?” I wanted some context for what was going on. I refused to fall into a pattern of him snapping at me and then apologizing.

He hesitated, then pulled out his phone and brought up his email. “I emailed my father to ask him for help. I’ve started to notice some odd powers manifesting and I don’t know how to deal with them. And this is what I got in return.” He handed the open email to me and, as I read it, I began to understand his anger.

Yutani, I wish you wouldn’t allow yourself to get so worried.
