Who had one week?

I flipped him off in the video call. “Hilarious.” I wasn’t surprised he’d been able to guess what had happened so quickly though. We’d always been able to read each other in an instant. Twin things.

My phone buzzed repeatedly in my hand as the rest of our friends answered the thread, but I refused to look at it.

“Is this a good thing?” Cole asked, lifting Arrietty to his shoulder to burp her. Seeing my brother this domesticated was wild, but knowing I was missing out on it clenched something in my chest.

I shrugged. “How’s my daughter?”

“We’ve been over this. She’s not your daughter.”

“Well you and I have the same DNA, twin, so she kinda is.”

“That’s not how that works.” Cole rolled his eyes. “I’m also glad you moved out before Arrietty understands your words and you confuse the hell out of her.”

Chuckling, I grabbed the teapot, getting the pour-over ready.

“Is that coffee for you?” Cole waggled his brows. “I didn’t think you drank coffee.”

“I don’t.”

Cole made his stupid, expectant face, and I heaved a breath.

“Can I ask you something without you making it a whole thing?”

“Probably not.”

I finished pouring the water and set the kettle back down. “How did you know? With Skylar?”

He hesitated, studying me. “If you’re asking, I think you already know.”

“Great. Super helpful.”

Grinning, he shrugged. “Can I make it a whole thing now?”

“I’m hanging up on you.”

The last thing I heard before I ended the call was my brother bellowing, “SKYLAR! GUESS WHAT —”

“Idiot,” I muttered at my blank phone screen, setting it on the counter.

Was he right? Did I already know what I thought I knew?

I raked a hand through my hair, feeling out of sorts, and grabbed the coffee I’d made. In the bedroom, Nat was still asleep. Moving to her side of the bed, I set the mug on the nightstand, and swept her hair off her face. She tended to sleep in, so I didn’t want to wake her up, but hopefully the coffee would show I was thinking of her when she woke up and I was gone.

I needed to stretch my legs.

On the back porch, I shifted, my fox eager to check out the snow. It had been too long since I’d had a shifted run. I’d been hesitant to fox out over here on pack lands, but with any luck, the wolves would still be hunkered down from the storm.

I lost track of time as I trotted through the forest, enjoying the brisk air and the cool snow under my paws. Snow fell from the trees overhead, landing on my tawny fur, but everything about the morning was serene.

Here and there I smelled wolves I knew, Darius the Alpha chief among them, but none of the scents were fresh enough to indicate I wasn’t alone this morning.

If I listened to my fox, I would mark her with a mating bite. He certainly wanted to claim her. I’d barely held back from biting her last night as it was.
