Chapter Eight

It took Brooke a week to find the courage to do what needed doing. She should have been in her cozy cabin, sleeping. Not there in Tucker’s enormous, kind of scary house. Earlier that evening, Shane and Frisco had carted the Christmas decorations boxes from the garage’s storage area, along with a sturdy ladder. Darcy had helped, too, then she’d gone on a date with the handsome widower who was pursuing her. The guys had offered to help remove the decorations from the large tree, but Brooke had said she could handle the job herself, so they’d let her. The speed with which they’d left the house was comical. And, yes, she would torment them later about it.

From where she sat in an over-sized leather recliner in the great room, she faced The Tree, as they called it. She should have finished her task by now. Except she’d found herself hesitant to get started. In theory, taking the tree down was a good idea. But she worried about overstepping an invisible boundary in Tucker’s life.

She studied the Scotch pine with its widespread branches and saw how it nearly reached the ceiling under the loft level. So, almost ten feet tall. This would be quite a task. But she could do it. Yet she still hesitated to get started.

The tree was important to Tucker, probably for more than being the last thing he’d done here before his life went to hell. He hadn’t gotten to share Christmas with his family because he’d been sitting in jail. They hadn’t gotten to open gifts together. At least his cousins had either opened them or taken them away. Or they’d put them somewhere to open with him at some other time.

Her eyes blurred, and she blinked at tears. She and Kyle hadn’t put up a tree, but she’d gotten him two presents: a new belt with a special buckle and a new shirt. Nothing too exciting. She didn’t know if he’d gotten her anything. She hadn’t found anything tucked away in the closets. But it didn’t matter. They’d never gotten to—

Enough! The past couldn’t be changed. She was moving on with her life, and it was time Tucker took another baby step forward. That tree was coming down tonight. She’d remove the many decorations and pack them away in the storage boxes, then figure out how to get the monstrous thing out of the house. Or maybe she’d get the guys to help her with that job tomorrow. That was a better plan.

It was almost midnight and pitch black outside, except for the sky full of stars sparkling like tiny diamonds on velvet. Where did that come from? Tucker was darn far from being a poet. Still, the sight always humbled him, making him and his troubles seem small in comparison.

The big F-250’s tires rumbled over the metal cattle guard at the entrance leading to the heart of the ranch compound. He yawned and fought to keep his eyes open. Bone-deep tired, he was ready to get back to his house.
