Dex

Everything in me was dying to run after my mate when he went off with Oddfinn, but he was right that I overstepped and he had every right to walk away. I whipped around and wanted to take my anger out on the witch, Castillo catching me before I even reached the containment she was in.

“She’s baiting you. You made the call. I’m sorry, my friend, but you did and you have to accept the consequences,” he comforted gently.

“I just wanted to remember my mate,” I rasped, my hound whimpering inside of me. “It was shredding my mind that I was forgetting him but my hound was crying for him, missing him. I cannot even imagine how hounds survive if their mates die. That piece kept fading now that I found it, Castillo.”

“That sounds a bit like temporary insanity and a valid defense,” Chamuel offered. “Explain that to your mate. He is smart. Give him the facts and beg his forgiveness. If mine could forgive me all I did, you have hope, Dex.”

“Thanks, Chamuel.”

He gave a firm nod but then smiled. “Tell Ana I was patient and praised him. He likes those things. I didn’t do it for that, but he does. It would make him happy.”

“I will,” I promised.

It was good advice, after all.

I wasn’t going to make the same mistakes though so instead of acting like his workroom was just any old kitchen or open area, I planned to try and intercept him after his shift. Except the stress of the night before and past week caught up with me and I crashed through my alarm even. I cursed under my breath when I saw the time, racing to shower and get my ass moving.

I thought I might still catch him, but instead I caught the tail end of something that hurt my heart.

“Look, I don’t care if he went to a culinary school,” a woman was saying in the kitchen and rather loudly where even if I was human I could have heard her from the doorway. “His attitude is shit and now that I’m remembering more of it, I’m not putting up with it.”

“He didn’t go to a culinary school,” a man replied calmly. “He went to the culinary school in Paris, France. I’m remembering things too and his resume is just one of them. He was part of the early admission program as he went to the affiliated junior high basically.”

“So what, he doesn’t just—”

“I also remember your attitude towards him too,” he added. “The overnight troll. The magical elf. The pretty spoiled princess since the expansion including his workroom and storage. Do you think that’s how a supervisor should act? And in front of the other employees?”

“You’re right, that’s a bit much, and clearly if I remembered I kept making comments, I would have watched them instead of thinking it was a one-time joke,” she lied out her ass.

Seriously, I could scent the lie from where I was standing, which was sort of amazing even if they were near the door and office.
