CHAPTER ELEVEN: ANNE

“You’ve let your hair grow out.”

I craft each word with care, speaking them clearly and with purpose. Derrick somehow goes even stiffer at them. He lets his hand fall from my chin and glances at me, but only barely before his gaze rockets straight ahead.

It’s a military stance. The kind you’d see in a movie, all perfect poise and steady shoulders. I might not have been a naval brat like Derrick was, but even I recognize this much.

And I remember it, from our time together before. It’s how I know for sure what I had only suspected a moment ago—he’s dipping a toe into the waters with me. He’s testing out the truth of what I’ve just confessed to him.

This isn’t the kind of sexual encounter that is part of the love story. It’s as it was when we very first met: a precursor. It’s a way to stretch that line of trust between us, see how deep it can go. When we were together and hooking up this way, it was a natural extension of everything we valued in one another. Now, though, it’s reverted back to that way we can give and take, push and pull.

See how much the other wants to take and what to avoid so we don’t break them.

But I’ll take it for now. I’ll take any test he’ll give me.

Hardly daring to blink, I reach a shaking hand up to the top of his left ear. There’s a sharp inhale from Derrick, but his eyes stay trained ahead. I run my fingers through the soft curls forming around his hairline, twisting them carefully around my fingers.

God—they elicit a physical reaction from me. My pussy floods at the thick velvet, and my thighs seem to remember at the same time my brain does how those curls once felt rubbing against my naked thighs.

“We keep it short,” I tell him. “You’ve let it go.”

Not a word from Derrick, but I note how a muscle in his jaw flexes and gives. He wants to say something, but he’s holding back.

He’s being a good boy.

I take another risk and use that same hand to take hold of his chin. Make him look at me. I run my thumb over the sharp stubble where he’s let his dark beard go, too.

“You’ve let this get out of hand, too.”

Again, no noise, but this time his gaze flicks over to meet mine. There’s a familiar tug in my lower belly.

“Answer me,” I order.

Derrick holds my gaze. There’s a challenge in them. I can almost read out the words he spat at me a minute ago: I did you trust you once. I trusted you with everything and you let me down.

I hold my breath.

“I’m sorry,” he whispers.

My chest has gone so tight it’s like a fucking vise. My fingers quiver across his stubbled jaw line before my thumb finds his full bottom lip and sweeps across the expanse of pink skin.

“Red, yellow, green,” I return in my own whisper. I can hardly hear myself, but pray he can read my lips in the dark.
