ANDIE

The agony over seeing Charlie had nearly destroyed me. I’d had flashbacks of watching my mom slowly slip away, of processing that Aunt Junie was gone without being able to say a proper goodbye to her. So many people had been taken from me, and I couldn’t possibly lose another. Not yet.

Then, when her parents had shown up… I’d been tempted to run away like a coward, given how long I’d avoided them, but Marlene had wrapped me in her arms, holding me like I was her own child and thanking me for bringing her daughter home.

A war of emotions erupted inside me. Pain burned through my muscles, and tears leaked freely down my cheeks as I held the woman I’d considered a second mother as a child.

“I’m so sorry,” I muttered over and over, but she and William insisted they understood and hadn’t once blamed me.

Foster stood by, holding me when I needed the extra strength and just being present when I needed to stand on my own.

As the hours ticked by, Beatrix called William and Marlene away to discuss the council, but I promised to update them as soon as anything changed.

Camille and Ava continued to move about the room, tending to witches non-stop. None of those brought back had woken yet, and I finally forced myself to leave Charlie’s side and check on the others.

Chase, Sheila, and Merrit were the only ones I’d talked to in depth before, but that didn’t mean my heart didn’t further shatter as I passed by all eleven of them. Family and friends all huddled next to the beds with their heads bent and hands folded in front of them.

We might have had magic on our side, but there was nothing wrong with asking the higher powers for a little assist.

When I noticed Ava at Charlie’s bed again, I hurried to make my way back, surprised it wasn’t Camille.

“What’s wrong?” I asked, not understanding why they’d switched places.

Ava offered me a small smile, and the dark circles forming under her eyes from the overuse of magic nearly matched that of Charlie’s hollow face.

“Nothing is wrong,” she answered defensively. “We’re doing our job the best we can.”

I reached a hand to her elbow. “I know. I’m sorry. Can I help?”

Foster got up from the chair he’d been resting in, a grimace on his face, but his concern wasn’t necessary. I was in a better place than I’d been when we’d returned. There was no reason for me to just stand here any longer.

Ava nodded. “Share some of that power you’ve got stored away with me.” Her tone was tired but joking. Though, maybe she was onto something.

“Where’s Beatrix?” I asked since I hadn’t spoken with her since we’d returned to the coven.

“She’s either still in the meeting about the council or she’s back at the pack,” Ava answered. “She keeps going back to make sure the wolves have all the help they might need.”

I glanced at Foster, needing his input since Beatrix wasn’t here to ask.
