IT had been centuries since Leofric had last spoken to another creature. Long, silent years kept in their own company.

They’d flown, of course. A wyvern who can’t fly might as well curl up and give themselves over the ravages of time. That was certainly how the others had gone. But Leofric had regularly left the safety of the cavern to soar above the chalk hills at night. It had become more dangerous since the establishment of the flying machines just north of the Downs, but they’d not been known as a great tracker for nothing. It had taken a few months to work out the flight paths, and to track their own new route, before getting back into the routine.

They looked down at the female before them who’d mentioned one of the early goddesses. Belisama. That goddess had always approached the Ancients with a certain amount of reverence, though that came from truly understanding the real power behind the flame. But her pantheon had been gone from this realm for centuries. Longer than that even. To return and bestow powers beyond her ken upon this unsuspecting human... it really wasn’t quite the done thing.

There was a reason why dragon shifters had had such short lifespans in the past. Their minds, too entrenched in binaries; their bodies, too fragile to cope with regular transformations. A dragon, a wyvern, needed to fly, to be free. And when you took that innate nature and shoved it into a package that was far better suited to the ground and to the mundane, it caused rifts in their minds.

This one though, this Kenna, was staring at them with undisguised interest. Not fear, although they’d sensed a distinct alarm when they’d smelled her earlier. What harm could it do? To share some knowledge with this shifter that might save her some heartache. Save her from herself.

“I will educate you,” they announced. “You are the first dragon shifter who ever came to me for advice, and I find that I like it.”

“There are others?”

She seemed eager, as if relieved that she was not the only one of her kind. Leofric hated to disavow her of that hope, but it had to be done. “No. As far as I am aware, you are the only one. There has not been a shifter amongst these hills in my most recent memory.” They looked down and added, “My most recent memory spanning centuries, you understand.”

“Oh.” The shifter sighed, but then straightened again. “Still, I suppose I have you.”

Something akin to protectiveness rose in a wave over them. The shifter would soon find that such things were not simply learnt.
