Several other innovations came about thanks to this, which are beyond the scope of this book, but suffice it to say that along with money came taxation, class differences, banking, and many other things we take for granted today. It also created some complexities as people and kingdoms themselves started trading with people belonging to other kingdoms.

Money Changers

Money-changers were the first foreign-exchange traders. They had a deep knowledge of the different kinds of coins from the different kingdom states, and how much each was worth relative to the others. We find them mentioned in ancient texts, such as the Bible. In one passage, Jesus famously expelled a number of them from the Temple in Jerusalem. These money changers would be conveniently located where travelers could find them and would exchange foreign coins for local ones, and take a percentage for their services. For example, if a coin from Kingdom A were worth exactly the same as a coin from Kingdom B (just to keep it simple), the money changer would take 100 coins from the one, and in return give 99 coins from the second, keeping one coin as their fee.
