Chapter 8

Lizzy watched Lexi out of the corner of her eye and sighed internally. Lexi was doing a bad job of hiding that something was up. After a wonderful night together Lexi had showed up at the Bakery and all but blurted out that they needed to talk. She had been trying hard ever since not to imagine the worst but her poor track record with dating was not helping. After closing up for the night, they had quietly walked over to Lexi’s room, only this time there were no teasing smiles or heady anticipation. In fact, Lizzy was starting to feel an oncoming dread.

Taking a seat on one of two chairs in the room Lizzy waited. Lexi sat down next to her and held her hand. “Baby I had a wonderful time with you last night.” Lizzy’s mind was going into overdrive now just waiting to hear the unsaid “but.”

“I never felt that way with anyone before and I want us to continue exploring what we have, but you need to know something about me first before we can go any further.”

“Ok.” Was all Lizzy could say, she was a mess of dread and curiosity. Whatever was going to be said it seems would determine if she and Lexi kept on seeing each other.

Instead of continuing, Lexi opened her laptop and gave it to Lizzy to watch.

It took a few moments before Lizzy’s brain caught up to what she was seeing. There were numerous pictures of Lexi with various men and women but the captions of the photos kept getting her name wrong. They were calling her Vanessa Rawlins.

“Vanessa Rawlins?” Lizzy wondered if Lexi was going to tell her she was in some sort of witness protection but when she looked at the articles some of the pictures were from last month. She had always known Lexi, Vanessa was sophisticated but in these pictures she looked even more so.

“My real name is Vanessa Rawlins, I used the name Lexi Peters to hide my identity.”

“But why?” “Are you in some sort of trouble?”

This was the last thing Lizzy had expected to hear when she came tonight and she realised she knew nothing about Lexi…no, Vanessa.

Vanessa began explaining to Lizzy everything about her dad and Melanie.

“I don’t understand …..Vanessa” Lizzy paused trying to make sense of all that was said.

“You did this all because of a bet?”

“You wanted to see if you could get someone to fall in love with you?” A sob tore out her throat before she could stop it. Images of all the guys who had pitied her attempts of trying to talk to them, some who were not so kind as to hide their true feelings. At least none of them had resorted to pity sex. Oh God, was that what it had been? A cold chill settled inside Lizzy at the thought.

Vanessa watched Lizzy with a sinking feeling. Of all the persons to not feel thrilled to hear their girlfriend was secretly rich, Lizzy was the one.
