Chapter Twenty-Four ~ Granny’s Devastated

“It is a curious thing, the death of a loved one. We all know that our time in this world is limited, and that eventually all of us will end up underneath some sheet, never to wake up. And yet it is always devastating when it happens to someone we know,

especially a loved one.”

― Lemony Snicket

“Father God, please guide the hands of the doctors working on my grandbaby. Encamp angels around her and touch her from the top of her head to the bottom of her feet. I know she hasn’t been in Your will as she ought to be, but we all fall short of Your glory, dear God. You said You will rain on the just as well as the unjust, and I come to Your throne of grace on her behalf asking You to rain your healing power on my Nikki. Father, she is nothing without You and needs Your mercy right now, dear God. Let Your will be done, not my will. I ask You all these things in Your darling Son Jesus’ name. Amen.”

“Excuse me, Mrs. Neal?”

“Yes, sir, I’m Mrs. Neal. How’s my grandbaby? Are you her doctor?”

“Yes, I’m Dr. Collins, and I have some bad news. We did everything we could possibly do . . . but Nicole didn’t make it.”

“Dear God! How?”

“Do you know if she had a history of hypertension and or an existing aneurism?”

“Not that I know of. Are you sure there’s nothing you can do for her? Please, Mr. Doctor, she’s all I have left.”

“I am truly sorry but we did everything in our power to help her. She had a large amount of opiates in her system along with alcohol, which increased her blood pressure severely, causing her aneurism to erupt. Again, I am extremely sorry for your loss, Mrs. Neal.”

“Jesus! Jesus! Jesus! Can I see her, Dr. Collins?”

“Yes, you can. I will have one of the nurses come out and get you.”

“Mrs. Neal, how is she doing? I’ve been looking all over for you.” Darnell questions as Dr. Collins went on his way.

“Not good, Darnell. My grandbaby’s left me. I’m here all alone now. God, why didn’t you take me instead? She was just a baby.”

“Damn! Forgive my language, Mrs. Neal. I am so sorry. This day just can’t get any worse. Why is God allowing this to happen?”

“Never question God, baby. It’s in His will. We may not understand it and the pain is unbearable, but He knows what He’s doing.”

“I think I’m beginning to have a hard time believing that. Too many people have been taken away from me at once. Maybe God doesn’t love me.”

“Hush now, you’re talking foolish. He loves you. He has to because He is love. Sometimes we as people make decisions that get us into trouble and, therefore, we have to suffer the consequences. God gives us the choice and it’s up to us to make the right one, baby.”

“I apologize. I guess I’m just hurting. You are an amazing woman, Mrs.
