Chapter 16

Adam slowly followed the irate man outside. Over his shoulder, Philippa saw the workers, still carrying their farming implements, crammed into the yard, silently watching Hugh. He huffed as he swung himself into his saddle, turned the horse’s head, and thundered from the yard.

When silence returned to Allesverloren, Adam reappeared in the kitchen and closed the door, bolting it. Then he closed the distance to Philippa. He pulled her hands away from her mouth and wrapped her in his arms.

“Do not be fearful, my love. I will not allow him to take you from me. I will break both his legs first.” His kiss soothed her fears; she believed he wouldn’t just hand her over to another man without putting up a fight. He walked into the bedroom, pulling her after him.

Sitting on the edge of the bed, he maneuvered her between his thighs. His hands worked the hem of her dress, pushing her skirt before them. His calloused palms smoothed over her bottom and up her back to her shoulders until he could flip the dress over her head.

Standing naked before him, she gripped his shoulders as he buried his face between her breasts. He stroked her belly. “This child shall be born at home, here, at Allesverloren, in this very bed.”

He looked up at her. “Rest assured, my love, we have a piece of paper claiming our legal marriage, and Hugh Fleming has no proof of the marriage in Cape Town he now wants to claim as his by proxy. He has nothing to back up any claim he makes. You and I lived in sin, as so many in the colony are forced to do, until we were legally married three weeks ago. My child growing inside you confirms how thoroughly our vows have been consummated. How does Hugh Fleming hope to convince the governor otherwise?”

She gasped when his hand dipped between her thighs, and he sucked one nipple deep into the heat of his mouth. He boldly explored her, a finger dipping into her. The arousal he created in her body pushed Hugh’s threats from her mind. Her husband’s thing stood erect inside his pants.

He switched his attention to her other breast, finding her pebbled clit with his thumb. His breath turned ragged, and she knew he was getting close to his point of no return. She herself shifted on her feet, her knees soft. Just when she thought they would give way, he lifted his head, her nipple still in his mouth.

With a soft pop, it slipped from his lips. “You are beautiful, Philippa. I can’t say I blame Hugh for his efforts to claim you, but he is not going to have you, not while I have breath left in my body and a cock ready to take you to places of pleasure.”

Gently, he lowered her to her back on the bed, dropped his pants to the floor, and settled his hips between her thighs. He groaned as he slipped into her in one long, smooth thrust until his balls tapped her ass.
