In the cellar of the cottage, beetles scurried up and down the rock walls entwined with invading weeds and frayed wires. Earwigs followed the rusty pipes that twisted around the barred stairwell to the open junction from which trickles of icy water dripped down on the three captives.

Hamberdeen sat on the straw-strewn dirt floor, his arms wrapped around himself for warmth. “Gregor. A traitor,” he exhaled.

Leslie paced and slammed his cap into his palm. “I was doing splendidly myself, until someone got themselves captured by great hulking werewolves.” He stopped pacing. “Are we going to just wait here for them to come back and gnaw our throats out, or are we going to think of a way out of this ratty hole?”

“Patience, young Leslie,” said Hamberdeen. “We can leave any time we choose.”

“What?”

Hamberdeen drew the key the mermaid gave him from his pocket. “I have a key.”

Betty sat on the top step of a moldy wooden ladder. She leaned her elbow on her knee and rested her face in her cupped hand. “We need to wait for Sherlock’s signal.”

“Not more great white egrets, I hope.” Leslie shoved his hands in his pockets and leaned his shoulder gloomily against the wall.
