“It’s getting so bad. Even in my craziest of nightmares, I never would have imagined it’d get this bad,” Isabella said.

Reece could hear the anguish in her voice, even over the phone. “We’re going to fix this, cupcake. We’ll find the symbol tonight, and then we’ll almost be ready.” He didn’t feel as optimistic as he sounded, but doom and gloom was everywhere lately, so he didn’t need to add to it.

He listened as Isabella told him about her day and how she had helped outfit two more floors above the existing one in his bakery building for people to stay. If they needed any more, they’d have to start using the empty floors above the apartments in the same building as Isaac’s tattoo shop. Could they still call it Isaac’s tattoo shop now that he was gone? As part owner of the buildings, he knew that eventually they’d fill the space with a new business, but for now he couldn’t think about it.

A light breeze hit as he stood on the balcony of his hotel room and continued to listen to Isabella.

“Anyway…” she said. “It’s all set up. Now, tell me again where you are and where you’re going. I swear I wasn’t awake when you told me before you left this morning.”

“That’s because I kept you up late last night.” He couldn’t help but smile as he vividly remembered why they’d lost sleep the night before.

She chuckled. “Yes, you did, and you’re welcome to anytime. But I know you have to go soon, so tell me again where you are.”

Reece pulled his phone away to check the time—fifteen minutes before eleven p.m.; he still had time. “We’re in the city of Nova Sintra, which is in southwestern Cape Verde. Pretty much in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean between the US and the African continent.”

“And that’s halfway to Johannesburg, South Africa… ah… you said that’s where you’re going, right?”

“Close enough. We’re going to the Sudwala Caves, which is a couple of hours away from Johannesburg and another five thousand miles from here.”

“How was it flashing five thousand miles?”

“Okay, I guess. When I got here, all I could think about was food. But that makes sense since I used more energy.”

They talked for a few more minutes and then Reece told Isabella he loved her before they said their goodbyes. What he didn’t say was that he might not live through the night.

The day before, Jack had pulled him aside after another group dinner and planning session.

“I know from my vision that you have to be one of the ones to go with us, but it could be dangerous,” Jack said, stress lines that hadn’t been there before around his mouth.

“I’m in, no matter what we face. But how dangerous do you think it’s going to be? And is there anything we can do to prepare?”

Jack ran his hand through his hair and let out a sigh. “I don’t know how dangerous it’ll be, but you’re going to have to manipulate part of a cave wall, and we’ll have to replace it.
